How to convert kg to lbs
The converter above is already set to kilograms → pounds. Type the number of kilograms and the answer appears as you type, along with the same weight in grams, ounces, stone, tonnes and every other weight unit.
- Type the weight in kg, decimals included, for example 72.5.
- Read the pounds in the result box, to up to 10 significant digits.
- Need the other way? Press the swap button (⇄) to convert pounds to kilograms.
- Copy the result with one click, ready for a form or a message.
The kg to lbs formula
The pound is defined as exactly 0.45359237 kilograms, by international agreement since 1959 (see NIST Special Publication 811). So:
pounds = kilograms ÷ 0.45359237, which is the same as kilograms × 2.2046226218…
Worked example: 70 kg ÷ 0.45359237 = 154.3235835 lb, about 154.3 lb.
Going back: kilograms = pounds × 0.45359237. So 150 lb × 0.45359237 = 68.0388555 kg.
Kg to lbs chart
| Kilograms | Pounds | Kilograms | Pounds |
|---|---|---|---|

Values are rounded for the chart; the converter shows them to 10 significant digits.
Converting kg to lbs in your head
A quick and surprisingly accurate method: double the kilograms, then add 10% of that.
For 70 kg: double is 140, 10% of 140 is 14, and 140 + 14 = 154 lb. The exact answer is 154.32 lb, so the shortcut is within about 0.2%. For a rough figure, just doubling (140) is about 9% low, fine for a quick sense of size but not for anything you’ll write down.
The reverse shortcut, pounds to kg: halve the pounds, then take away 10% of that. 200 lb → 100 → 100 − 10 = 90 kg (exact: 90.72 kg).
Where you’ll need kg to lbs
- Body weight. The US uses pounds; most other countries use kilograms. Health apps, gym equipment and doctors’ forms can use either. Once you know your weight, the BMI calculator and the calorie calculator accept both units.
- Luggage. Airlines often state baggage allowances in both, for example 23 kg, which is 50.7 lb. Check your airline’s exact limit, because rounding the wrong way can cost an overweight fee.
- The gym. Weight plates and dumbbells come in kg or lb; a 20 kg bar is 44.1 lb.
- Shipping and parcels. Couriers in the US quote by the pound, elsewhere by the kilogram.
- Babies and pets. Birth weights and vet records often switch between units.
Kg, lbs and stone
In the UK and Ireland body weight is often given in stone: 1 stone = 14 pounds = 6.35029318 kg. The converter shows stone in the same table, so 70 kg appears as 11.02 st and 154.32 lb at once. To write it the traditional way, take the whole stones (11) and multiply the remainder by 14: 0.02 × 14 ≈ 0.3, so about 11 st 0.3 lb.
Mass, weight and precision
Strictly, kilograms and pounds measure mass, while “weight” in physics is a force. In everyday life, and on every scale you’ll use, the two are treated the same, and the conversion factor is the same too. Because the pound is defined from the kilogram, the conversion is exact: any difference you see between calculators is only rounding. For other conversions, such as length or temperature, use the full unit converter; for Celsius to Fahrenheit, there’s a page like this one.
How many decimals should you keep?
The converter shows up to 10 significant digits so nothing is lost, but you rarely need them all. For body weight, one decimal is plenty: 154.3 lb. For luggage and parcels, round up to be safe against a limit. For recipes, the nearest whole pound or ounce is fine. For science, lab work or trade, keep the precision your scale gives and round only at the end; rounding in the middle of a calculation can add up.
