How to split a PDF
Splitting a PDF turns one document into several smaller ones: each chapter as its own file, every page separately, or just the pages you need. It happens in your browser, so the PDF never leaves your device.
- Select your PDF. The page count appears straight away.
- Choose how to split: every page, page ranges, or every N pages.
- Choose Split PDF. Each new file is opened again to check it has the right number of pages.
- Download the files you need; each is named after your PDF and its pages, such as report-p3-7.pdf.
Three ways to split
Every page
Each page becomes its own PDF. A 12-page file gives 12 files. Useful for scans that hold several separate documents, or for sending single pages. More on the split PDF pages page.
Page ranges
Type the ranges you want, separated by commas; each range becomes one file. For example 1-3, 4-10, 11-end makes three files: pages 1 to 3, 4 to 10, and 11 to the last page. A single number, like 5, makes a one-page file.
Every N pages
Cut the document into equal chunks: “every 2 pages” turns a 10-page PDF into five 2-page files. Handy for batches of two-page forms or double-sided scans of the same form.
Writing page ranges
| You type | You get |
|---|---|
| 1-3 | One file with pages 1, 2 and 3 |
| 1-3, 7 | Two files: pages 1–3, and page 7 |
| 5-end | One file from page 5 to the last page |
| 1, 2, 3 | Three one-page files |
Page numbers are the PDF’s own order, starting at 1, which may differ from numbers printed on the pages. If a range doesn’t fit the document, you’re told which one before anything is created.
What stays the same in the new files
Pages are copied, not re-rendered: text stays sharp and selectable, images keep their quality, and page sizes and orientation don’t change. Your original PDF isn’t touched. Document-level extras such as bookmarks aren’t copied into the new files; if you need them, keep the original alongside the parts.
Split, extract or delete?
| You want to… | Use |
|---|---|
| Turn one PDF into several files | Split PDF (this tool) |
| Keep a few pages as one new file | Split PDF with one range, such as 4-6 |
| Remove some pages and keep the rest in one file | Delete PDF pages |
| Change the order of pages | Organize PDF |
Reading the results list
After splitting, every new file is listed with its pages, page count and size, plus its own Download button. The line above the list confirms how many files passed the page-count check, for example “3 of 3 have the right page count”. If you change your ranges and split again, the list is replaced, so you never mix up files from two attempts.
Common jobs that combine tools
| Job | Steps |
|---|---|
| Upload a long scan to a portal with a per-file limit | Split into parts → compress each part to the limit |
| Send one section of a report as images | Split the section out → PDF to JPG |
| Re-order chapters | Split by chapter → Merge PDF in the new order |
| Make a scanned section searchable | Split it out → OCR PDF |
In the full version you can ask for the whole chain in one request, and each step is shown as it runs.
On a phone or computer
Split PDF works in any modern browser on Windows, Mac, Linux, iPhone and Android, with nothing to install. On a phone, pick the PDF from Files or your downloads; the new files are saved to your downloads folder, where you can share them straight to email or chat apps.
When people split PDFs
Upload limits
Portals that cap each file. Split into parts, then compress any part that’s still too big.
Scanned batches
One scan containing several documents, such as invoices or forms, separated into individual files.
Chapters and sections
A report or book divided into chapters to share separately.
Sending only what’s needed
One page of a contract or statement instead of the whole document.
Before rearranging
Split, then put parts back together in a new order with Merge PDF.
Removing pages
To drop pages rather than keep them, Delete PDF pages is quicker.
Splitting by file size
Some portals limit each file to, say, 5 MB. A PDF’s size depends mostly on its images, so pages differ a lot in weight and there’s no reliable page count per megabyte. A practical approach: split into reasonable parts, check each file’s size in the results list, and split again or compress any part that’s over the limit. In the full version you can ask: “split this into files under 5 MB each”.
Splitting very long PDFs
Because splitting happens on your own device, very long documents, such as a 500-page manual or a year of scanned statements, depend on your computer’s memory. Splitting into larger chunks (for example every 50 pages) is quicker than creating hundreds of single pages, and it’s easier to handle the downloads. On a phone, prefer ranges over “Every page” for long files. Your files are never sent to a server, however large they are.
Split by asking
- “Split this into one file per chapter: pages 1-12, 13-30, 31-end.”
- “Save every page as its own PDF and name them by page.”
- “Take pages 4 to 6 out as a separate PDF, then compress it under 1 MB.”
Privacy and checks
The PDF is split in your browser with pdf-lib, an open-source library (MIT licence); it isn’t uploaded to our servers. After each file is made, it’s opened again and its page count compared with the range you asked for; the results list shows how many passed. Your files are never used to train AI.
Troubleshooting
| Problem | What to do |
|---|---|
| “Password-protected” | Unlock it with Unlock PDF if you know the password, then split |
| A range is rejected | Use numbers between 1 and the page count, with a hyphen for ranges and commas between them |
| The wrong pages came out | Use the PDF’s page order, not the numbers printed on the pages |
| A part is still too large | Compress it with Compress PDF |
| Pages are sideways | Fix them with Rotate PDF |
Split PDF: questions and answers
How do I split a PDF into separate files?
Select it above, choose Every page, Page ranges or Every N pages, and choose Split PDF. Download each file from the list.
How do I extract certain pages from a PDF?
Choose Page ranges and type the pages, for example 4-6. You get a new PDF with only those pages.
Is my PDF uploaded?
No. Splitting runs in your browser, and nothing is sent to our servers.
Does splitting reduce quality?
No. Pages are copied as they are, so text and images stay exactly the same.
Can I split a scanned PDF?
Yes. Scanned pages are split the same way; the text stays an image unless you run OCR.
Can I split a PDF on my phone?
Yes. The tool works in mobile browsers; the new files go to your downloads folder, ready to share.
Can I put the parts back together?
Yes, in any order, with Merge PDF.
