Your image stays on your device. Only use pictures you have the right to share.
How to use the meme generator
The meme generator puts bold text on your own picture and gives you an image file to share. It runs in your browser: your picture is never uploaded, and the download has no watermark.
- Choose your image with the button, or drag it onto the preview. JPG, PNG and WebP photos and screenshots all work. Without an image you get a plain blue background, handy for a text-only meme.
- Pick a style: Classic puts white text with a black outline at the top and bottom of the picture; Caption bar above adds a white strip over the image with dark text, the style common on social media.
- Type your text. Press Enter to start a new line where you want one; long lines wrap by themselves.
- Adjust the look: text size, colour, ALL CAPS and the black outline.
- Download a PNG or JPG. The file is named after your image, for example
holiday-meme.png.
Classic meme or caption bar?
| Classic (on the image) | Caption bar above | |
|---|---|---|
| Where the text goes | Top and bottom of the picture | A white bar added above the picture |
| Text style | White, bold, black outline | Dark, bold, no outline |
| Covers the picture? | Yes, the top and bottom edges | No, the whole picture stays visible |
| Best for | The traditional two-line joke: set-up on top, punchline below | Screenshots and photos where every detail matters, and longer captions |
The classic look is known as an image macro: a picture with large outlined text. The outline is what keeps white text readable over both light and dark parts of a photo, so leave it on unless your background is plain and dark.
Text that fits itself
Fitting text by hand is the fiddly part of most meme makers. Here the generator does it for you:
- Wrapping: words move to a new line when they reach the edge of the picture, with a small margin on each side.
- Shrinking: if the text would cover too much of the picture, the size steps down until it fits. In the classic style the top and bottom text each get up to about a third of the height, so they never collide.
- The size slider sets the starting size as a share of the image width (5% to 16%), so the text looks the same on a small screenshot and a large photo.
The font is Impact, the traditional meme typeface, wherever your device has it; otherwise the nearest bold font (such as Arial Black) is used, so the result can look slightly different on some phones. Short text reads best: memes are usually seen for a second while scrolling, so aim for a few words per line.
Image size and quality
The meme keeps your picture’s shape. Very large photos are scaled so the longest side is at most 2,400 pixels, which is sharper than any social feed shows and keeps the file a sensible size. The size of the finished image appears under the preview.
- PNG keeps text edges perfectly crisp. Choose it for screenshots, text-heavy memes and anything you’ll edit again.
- JPG gives a much smaller file for photos, at high quality. Choose it for messaging apps and when a site limits upload size.
If a platform asks for a specific size, for example a square post, resize the finished meme with the image resizer. To make a big file smaller, use compress image, or switch formats with the image converter.
Which pictures work?
Any picture your browser can open: JPG, PNG, WebP and GIF, including phone photos and screenshots. An animated GIF becomes a still image of its first frame. iPhone HEIC photos aren’t supported yet; the generator tells you so instead of failing quietly. On an iPhone, a screenshot of the photo works straight away, or set the camera to Most Compatible (Settings › Camera › Formats) so new photos are saved as JPG.
Why there are no meme templates here
Many meme sites offer a gallery of famous pictures. Those images were made by photographers, studios and other people, and most sites copy them without permission. We don’t, so you won’t find a template library here. Instead the generator is built around your own pictures: your photos, your screenshots, or images you have the right to use.
Original memes also tend to work better: a picture from your team, your product or your day is something nobody has seen before. If you need a background, the plain blue canvas works well for quotes and text-only jokes.
Ideas for your next meme
- Work and school: a team photo with a caption about Monday meetings, deadlines or exam week.
- Product and marketing: a screenshot of your own app with a caption bar explaining the feature in one line.
- Pets: your cat’s most dramatic face, top text for the situation, bottom text for the reaction.
- Events: a caption over a group photo, then turn the event link into a code with the QR code generator.
- Decisions: can’t choose a caption? Put your options in spin the wheel and let it pick.
Private by design
Your picture is opened and drawn on your own device. Nothing is uploaded, stored or used to train AI, and closing the page removes it. There’s no sign-up, no watermark and no limit on how many memes you make. More in Trust and privacy.
Ask in plain words
- “Put ‘When the code works first time’ on top of my photo.”
- “Add a caption bar above this screenshot.”
- “Make my meme a JPG for WhatsApp.”
Type it under the generator or in the AI workspace.
Meme generator: questions and answers
Do I need an account, and is there a watermark?
No account is needed and there’s no watermark. Browser tools have no limit on how many times you use them.
Is my picture uploaded?
No. The meme is made in your browser and your picture never leaves your device.
Can I make a meme without a picture?
Yes. Without an image you get a plain blue background for a text-only meme.
What font does it use?
Impact, the classic meme font, where your device has it; otherwise the nearest bold font.
Can I put the text above the picture instead?
Yes. Choose “Caption bar above” to add a white bar with dark text over the image.
Should I download PNG or JPG?
PNG for the crispest text and screenshots; JPG for a smaller file from a photo.
Why are there no famous meme templates?
Those pictures belong to other people, so we don’t copy them. Use your own pictures or ones you have the right to share.
Does it work with iPhone photos?
JPG and PNG photos and screenshots work. HEIC photos aren’t supported yet.
