How to convert PNG to JPG

This PNG to JPG converter is set to JPG and runs in your browser: nothing is uploaded.

  1. Add your PNG files by dropping them on the box above or choosing Select images.
  2. Pick a background colour if your PNG has transparent areas (white is the default).
  3. Set the quality (90 to start) and press Convert to JPG.
  4. Download each JPG, or one ZIP for several.

Why convert PNG to JPG?

PNG is lossless: it stores every pixel exactly. That’s perfect for screenshots, logos and diagrams, but it makes photos heavy. A photo saved as PNG can be several times bigger than the same photo as JPG, and you’d hardly see a difference on screen.

Converting to JPG helps when:

  • A file is too big to email, attach or upload.
  • A form asks for JPG, as many photo and document uploads do.
  • A folder of screenshots is taking up too much space on your phone or computer.
  • A website loads slowly because its photos were saved as PNG.

Transparent PNGs and the background colour

A PNG can have see-through areas, such as the space around a logo or an icon. JPG has no transparency, so something has to fill those areas. Many converters turn them black, which ruins a logo. Here you choose the colour:

  • White (the default) suits documents, forms and most websites.
  • Your page’s background colour makes a logo blend into a coloured website or slide.
  • Black or a dark colour suits dark themes and presentations.

If you need to keep the transparency, don’t convert to JPG: keep the PNG, or use WebP, which supports transparency with smaller files (the image converter makes WebP too).

When to keep PNG instead

JPG is lossy, and its compression shows most around sharp edges: small text, thin lines and flat areas of colour can get faint smudges called artefacts. So it’s worth keeping PNG for:

  • Screenshots you need to read closely, such as code, receipts or settings screens.
  • Logos and icons, especially with transparency.
  • Diagrams, charts and pixel art.
  • Images you’ll keep editing, since each JPG save loses a little more detail.

If a screenshot must become a JPG, use a high quality such as 95 to keep text crisp.

How much smaller will it be?

It depends on the picture. Photos and images with smooth gradients shrink the most. Simple graphics with large flat areas may shrink only a little, and occasionally a very simple PNG is already smaller than any JPG. The converter shows the new size next to the old one, so you can see the difference before downloading. For an exact limit, such as under 200 KB, use compress image, which finds the quality that fits.

Converting screenshots on a phone

Phones save screenshots as PNG, so a camera roll full of them can take a lot of space. Open this page on your phone, tap Select images, choose the screenshots and convert them to JPG at quality 90. Download the ZIP or the single images, and keep the PNG originals only if you need pixel-perfect text. On an iPhone, this is also the easy way to turn a HEIC photo into a JPG: take a screenshot of it (at your screen’s resolution), then convert the PNG.

Same size in pixels, right way up

Converting doesn’t crop or scale your image: a 1920 × 1080 PNG becomes a 1920 × 1080 JPG. Every result is opened again and its dimensions checked before you download it. To make the image smaller in pixels too, use the image resizer afterwards.

Private, with hidden data removed

Your PNG files are converted in your browser and never uploaded, stored or used to train AI. The JPG is saved fresh from the pixels, so no hidden metadata is carried over. More in Trust and privacy.

PNG to JPG: questions and answers

How do I change a PNG to a JPG?

Add the PNG above, press Convert to JPG and download the result.

Why does my logo get a white background?

JPG can’t store transparency, so transparent areas are filled with the colour you choose. White is the default; pick another with the background colour.

Will the JPG be smaller?

Usually much smaller for photos. Simple graphics may shrink less. The new size is shown next to the old one.

Will text in screenshots stay sharp?

Use a high quality such as 95. For screenshots you need to read closely, keeping PNG is best.

Can I convert many PNGs at once?

Yes. Add them all and download one ZIP.

Are my images uploaded?

No. Conversion happens in your browser.
